Why We’re Choosing to Raise Rabbits for Meat

It’s not always an easy conversation, but it’s an important one. At Hallowell Harvest, we believe in raising animals ethically and sustainably. Rabbits are one of the most efficient meat sources on the planet. They require less land, water, and feed than larger livestock and produce lean, protein-rich meat that's perfect for stews, roasts, and sautés.
So why rabbits?
Efficiency: Rabbits convert feed to protein faster than chickens or cows. They're incredibly efficient at turning local feed and forage into high-quality meat.
Sustainability: They require less space, water, and food—making them an eco-conscious choice, especially on a small regenerative farm like ours.
Nutrition: Rabbit meat is lean, tender, high in protein, and low in fat. It's easy to cook and absorbs flavor beautifully.
Ethics: We raise all our animals with care and intention. Our rabbits are housed humanely, with room to move, fresh air, quality feed, and hands-on care every day.
We’re not a factory farm. We believe people should know where their food comes from, how it’s raised, and why it matters. For us, that means producing meat with transparency, respect, and connection to the land.
